Behind The Scenes with Cassandra House:

ZanaD:What is the name of your band?

Cassandra House

ZanaD:Where are you from?

C: Long Island, New York

ZanaD:What type of music do you play?

C: People always ask me that, but i’m never too sure what genre it is. I like to say it’s a mixture of Acoustic Folk, Bluesish Country. Hah

ZanaD: What is the best advice you have for people who want to break into the music industry?

C: Probably advice I should have taken a little earlier in life, & that’s just to keep on. keep on writing, keep on loving what you do, keep on playing. the motivation just snowballs. and doors open.

ZanaD: How old were you when you started performing?

C: Well, I started singing shortly after I turned 1, ha, but i started playing guitar and writing songs when I was 14.

ZanaD: How many years have you been writing music for?

C: Hah, I guess that would be an even 10, although I would always write songs when I  was younger, just not necessarily credible ones 🙂

ZanaD: Where would your dream place be to perform at?

C: Being from Long Island, I’ve always dreamed of Jones Beach, just because that’s where I grew up going to concerts, and it’s just so beautiful. I used to look back at the audiences at concerts while the act was going on and imagine myself looking up at those stands. I am such a dork, but I would really like to see that in my life.

ZanaD: What inspires you to write music?

C: Everything. colors, movies, candles burning, fashion, dance, something someone says, watching strangers be beautiful and not know it, family, the feeling of nostalgia, perfume, old photographs. everything in life has it’s own rhythm or melody.

ZanaD: That was beautiful 🙂 Whats the song you need to listen to when your feeling down?

C: It depends on if I feel like exploring the “downness” or wanting to be distracted from it. My song to cheer myself up & puts alot of things into perspective in an extremely funny way is Shooby Taylor’s “Lift Evr’y Voice and Sing” . But if I need a good cry (because sometimes, we all do ha) I definitely delve into some serious Bon Iver, Tori Amos, or Jeff Buckley.

ZanaD: Whats your favorite band?

C: Hm. I mean, that’s kind of impossible. When I first started writing, my favorite band was Travis, because the lead singer, Fran Healey, wrote the most incredible lyrics. Now though, it’s kind of hard. There are so many talented people, both new on the scene, undiscovered, or classic. Right now I am a huge fan of Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Fistful of Mercy, Bowerbirds, Band of Horses, The Arcade Fire, as well as a bunch of local artists such as The Falco Brothers, Johnny Jordan, John Flor Sisante, Will Knox, & Jesse Ruben. There’s really no one, I can go on forever about this. haha.

ZanaD: Whats your favorite song?

C: “Favorite Song” is a funny little bird, she’s always changing forms. For me, it’s been everything from ‘over the rainbow’, to ‘lover, you should’ve come over’. also, take a listen to ‘kissing in the rain’ by tori amos. fabulous. but yeah, again, really hard question to answer definitely.

ZanaD: Who is your hero?

C: Pretty much my whole family. My Grandmother was my whole heart, though. So, her.

ZanaD: If you could have three wishes come true what would they be and why?

C: Oh jeez. This is hard. To live and be happy. To love and be loved. To create freely.

ZanaD:Who is your hero?

Pretty much my whole family. My Grandmother was my whole heart, though. So, her.

ZanaD:When is your next album coming out?

It’s gonna be my first, it’s my baby. And it’s due around the end of october, hopefully. So pumped.

ZanaD:When is your next concert?

I’m playing with fellow songwriters Will Knox & Jesse Ruben upstairs at the Grey Horse Tavern. You can check out the venue

ZanaD:Where do you see your band in 5 years from now?

Well if everything goes smoothly, I hope to still be in New York because I love it so. If I had my wish, I would be writing songs for a living, performing & recording. Hopefully having some sort of porch in the country to write songs on. Ha.

What is your dream?

To be fufilled and happy. To feel lighter than air. To love and be loved. To sing about all that.

If you could be in any place right now where would it be?

I miss Greece almost every day. Or my balcony in Sardegna. Sometimes though, I want to be nowhere else but where I am.

If you were stuck on an island what three items would you bring?

Guitar. Seeds for a Strawberry Patch. Water Filter. haha.

If you were trapped in a room what three people would you want to be with?

Honestly, my three girlfriends. I know I COULD go with the whole famous writers, dead guys, etc. But at the end of the day, I have the most fun with my girls.

What musician would you want to go on a date with and why?

Well well. I mean, Jeff Buckley is kind of my dream man. In light of this, I would probably pick someone like Ryan Adams, or Caleb Followill of Kings of Leon.Because they’re very cute. and they write amazing songs.

Favorite quote?

“Who knows how to make love stay?

Tell love you are going to the Junior’s Deli on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn to pick up a cheesecake, and if love stays, it can have half. It will stay.

Tell love you want a momento of it and obtain a lock of its hair. Burn the hair in a dime-store incense burner with yin/yang symbols on three sides. Face southwest. Talk fast over the burning hair in a convincingly exotic language. Remove the ashes of the burnt hair and use them to paint a mustache on your face. Find love. Tell it you are someone new. It will stay.

Wake love up in the middle of the night. Tell it the world is on fire. Dash to the bedroom window and pee out of it. Casually return to bed and assure love that everything is going to be all right. Fall asleep. Love will be there in the morning.”
