Behind The Scenes With Billy Simons

I had the great chance to speak with the very clever and talented Billy Simons. His songs are extremely entertaining. I definetly recommend you check him out 🙂 He also just came out with a new album coming out soon inspired by a road trip across the country. Become a fan of Billy Simons 🙂

Behind The Scenes With Billy Simons:

ZanaD:What is the name of your band?
Billy Simons

ZanaD: Where are you from?
Billy: Ludlow, MA

ZanaD: What type of music do you play?
Billy: Acoustic folk pop rock

ZanaD: What is the best advice you have for people wanting to get their music out there?
Billy: Be patient – work hard – and always remember why you do what you do. The second you lose track of that, it just becomes a frustrating job with a steady uphill terrain.

ZanaD: What got you into doing music?
Billy: My brother played classical piano growing up and going to his recitals and watching him come home with trophies always made me jealous.

ZanaD: How old were you when you started playing/singing?
Billy: 12-13

ZanaD: How long have you been writing music for?
Billy: About 8 years

ZanaD: Where would your dream place be to perform at?
Billy: It sounds trite, but Carnegie Hall would be amazing.

ZanaD: Are you close with the people in your band?
Billy: Some yes, some no. Songwriting is a very private thing for me, and many of my performances are solo acoustic. But the guys in the full band are good guys.

ZanaD: What inspires you to do music? It just feels right.
Billy: Regardless of what’s going on in or around my life, picking up a guitar makes everything better.

ZanaD: Whats the song you need to listen to when your feeling down?
Billy: Short People Got No Reason To Live by Randy Newman

ZanaD: Whats your favorite band?
Billy: Hard question, because comparing so many bands is a matter of apples and oranges… but if I had to pick one, it’d probably be Paul Simon.

ZanaD: What’s your favorite song?
Billy: I can honestly and confidently say that I don’t have one.

ZanaD: When is your next album coming out?
Billy: In a few weeks!

ZanaD: When is your next concert?
Billy: TBA
Billy: Ideally, I see it as a full time career that allows me to travel, share my songs with people around the country who want to hear them. I think it’s important to stay positive, but also not plan for overnight success – it’ll just bring you down.

ZanaD: What is your dream?
Billy:  To be a troubadour. Travel and share my music.

ZanaD: What is your favorite food?
Billy: I love grilled chicken. I could probably eat a grilled chicken salad every day, so long as a few times a year I could have a couple greek dishes my mom makes.

ZanaD: If you could be in any place right now where would it be?
Billy: I haven’t been home to see my family in about 3 months. I’ve been traveling and writing and recording… I would love to be at home with my parents and brother and sister.

ZanaD: If you were stuck on an island what three items would you bring?
Billy: I realize it’s down to life and death at this point, and an acoustic guitar doesn’t seem to be a reasonable thing to pick. But I still would. Then probably a toothbrush and a large container of water.

ZanaD: If you were trapped in a room what three people would you want to be with?
Billy: My brother, his wife, and my best friend, Nicholas. They may be the only three humans on the planet I could tolerate for an extended period of time in close quarters .

ZanaD: What musician would you want to go on a date with and why? Billy: I dated Lady Gaga for a very short time in college. So that doesn’t count. Taylor Swift is too tall and she isn’t my type… Either Rihanna or Ingrid Michaelson. Lots of variety across the spectrum, I know.

ZanaD: Describe your ideal partner in three words
Billy: Thinks. I’m. Funny.

ZanaD: Whats your biggest turnoff?
Billy: Bad health habits

ZanaD: What do you look for in a friend?
Billy: Critical opinions and trust and they better have a good sense of humor as well

ZanaD: Where do you want to live when your older?
Billy: On a large plot of land with no neighbors around. A modest home in a quiet place. Probably New England.

ZanaD: Whats your favorite tv show?
Billy: Arrested Development stole my heart a few years back… but these days 30Rock has me going. Of course nobody will ever take Seinfeld’s place.

ZanaD: What’s your favorite color?
Billy: I’ve always been a blue guy

Behind The Scenes With Emma Davis:

I had the fabulous opportunity of chatting with the talented and beautiful  Emma Davis all the way from London!Emma is currently living in Australia and hopes to share her music with the world. Check out her music today 🙂

Behind The Scenes With Emma Davis

ZanaD: What is the name of your band?

Emma Davis

ZanaD: Where are you from?

Emma: London. I lived there until I finished school, moved to Boston for a year to study music, and now live in Sydney.

ZanaD: What type of music do you play?

Emma: Hmm well yesterday a magazine described is as NOT fey. I had to look ‘fey’ up but apparently it means in unusally high spirits as was believed to be the state preceding death. Or more simply, doomed to die – win.

ZanaD: What is the best advice you have for people who want to break into the music industry?

Emma: I don’t think I have by any means broken into the music industry. I don’t think I would be struggling to pay my rent if that was the case. I do get to play lots of shows and meet lots of musicians though so I suppose my advice would be to try to do whatever is most true to you and nothing else.

ZanaD: How old were you when you started performing?

My earliest memory is of playing a Beatles song at a classical concert at primary school – slightly strange in retrospect.

How many years have you been writing music for?

Emma: I’ve been making up my own music since I was very little but I don’t think you could have really called it music until a lot later, maybe my teens? It was appropriately angst- filled of course.

ZanaD: Where would your dream place be to perform at?

Emma: I like performing at places that feel like they weren’t made to perform in. Like tiny cellar bars, or people’s bedrooms. I think stages and lights and whatnot ruin the magic a little, but obviously they are there for a reason so perhaps that was a silly comment.

ZanaD: What inspires you to write music?

Emma: Everything around me really. I happen to live somewhere where everyone else seems inspired to create things- it’s very infectious.

ZanaD: Whats the song you need to listen to when your feeling down?

Emma: I tend to play my guitar when I’m down. That’s probably why my songs are so bloody sad.

ZanaD: Whats your favorite band?

Emma: At the moment, Freelance Whales or Laura Veirs (not technically a band I know). I get a little obsessed with certain albums rather then bands. An album that you can listen to from start to finish over and over again is a winner for me.

ZanaD: Whats your favorite song?

Emma; I love any song that feels like a slight punch in the heart. Any song that you listen to and you can’t ever imagine the moment where it was constructed. It sounds as if is was always there, it was always a song. That’s the way that it was supposed to sound.

ZanaD:Who is your hero?

Emma: I have two and I call them mum and dad.

If you could have three wishes come true what would they be and why?

Emma:Obviously there are big world-changing wishes that I would make first. On a much smaller and more self-focused scale, to be able to travel and play music…at the same time! To be able to buy my mum and dad a nice big house.

ZanaD: When is your next album coming out?

Emma: Soon! (it may be out by the time this is published) 16th October.

ZanaD: When is your next concert?

Emma: The 16th October at the Empress Hotel,

ZanaD: Where can people go to listen to your music?

Emma:, or you can download the new single at

ZanaD: Where do you see your band in 5 years from now?

Emma: Hopefully still playing music. At the rate I’m going probably with a few more instruments and a little less money.

ZanaD:What is your dream?

Emma: To be payed to travel and play music. What could possibly be better then that.

ZanaD: If you could be in any place right now where would it be?

Emma: I’m pretty happy right here. In a cafe in Newtown with a delicious coffee and a day off.

ZanaD: If you were stuck on an island what three items would you bring?

Emma:My rusty old volkswagen beetle, my favourite pair of sneakers and my first guitar. I realise that these three things are all completely useless on a desert island but I never said I was practical.

ZanaD:If you were trapped in a room what four people would you want to be with?

Emma: My mum, dad sister and brother. We would all drive each other completely crazy but atleast I’d have that unconditional love to reason with.

ZanaD: What musician would you want to go on a date with and why?

Emma: All of the Spice Girls. I find it hard to believe that they actually exist -they’re very fictional to me. I need to be proved wrong.

ZanaD: Favorite quote?

Emma: A line from ‘Kathy’s Song’ by Simon and Garfunkel – Why do i spend my time, writing songs I can’t believe with words that tear and strain to rhyme’. This line sits in the back of my head whenever I’m writing a song.

Behind The Scenes With Nathan Rightnour

I had the incredible chance to speak with the extremely gifted Nathan Rightnour. Nathan is a music producer and composer for the Hollywood film, TV and video game industries. Nathans work has been featured in many different places, including several iPhone and iPad apps, music production libraries and video games for the XBOX and PS3. Be sure to check out Nathans incredible work.

Behind The Scenes With Nathan Rightnour

ZanaD: Tell us about your work?

Nate: I write music for film, TV, and anything interesting that comes my way, really. Clients, sometimes other artists, come to me asking for certain kinds of music, and I’m generally quite versatile in the types of music I take on. I perform and record nearly everything myself, but sometimes I’ll enlist great musicians to collaborate with.  I don’t really enjoy the idea of touring because I love being in my studio creating new music, as opposed to performing last month’s music every night. Some people thrive on it, and that’s great, but I find fulfillment in being in a creative mental space every day.

ZanaD: Where are you from?

Nate: Fairfax, Virginia – about thirty minutes outside DC. There is a huge soul and jazz scene, which influences me to this day. Not to long ago I moved to Boston to attend the Berklee School of Music, and after three years I was offered a job at Seven45 Studios where they were (and still are) producing a revolutionary music game called Power Gig for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. It was an amazing experience and there was a lot of room for growth there, but after half a year I had an opportunity to move to Los Angeles, which is the best place to break into the music industry as a composer-producer. I was doubtful at first because there is such great talent out there and so few places to squeeze into the industry. Plus, the economy was shite, so quitting a great job seemed like the worst possible move.  Nonetheless, I finally decided to move to LA because I didn’t want to get too settled into a career path that wasn’t exactly what I wanted to do. I would certainly be happy, but at the same time asking “what if” for the rest of my life… which is less than what I demand for myself. It was really the hardest decision of my life, but the sacrifice seems to have paid off so far!

ZanaD: What type of music do you play?

Nate: Honestly, a bit of everything. Keeps things interesting.

ZanaD: What is the best advice you have for people who want to break into the music industry?

Nate: Persistence leads to success. Be proactive – THINK about what you’re doing. Figure stuff out. Be curious. Be intimate with your tools; get to know them; if there’s something in your way – if you hate technology or whatever – heal and get over it. Create opportunities and be ready when they come – there is no such thing as luck. Visualize yourself as a perpetual student, of yourself and the world around you. If you act on these mindsets, all the little pieces will fall into place.

ZanaD: How many years have you been writing music for?

Nate: I don’t reminisce much, but I guess I’ve been writing since I first touched a piano as a kid; I loved playing but I couldn’t care less about reading the notes in the books, so I just played whatever. When I first discovered music production software, I was hooked. I “released” my first EP when I was 12. Stylistically it was all over the place, but sort of electronic music and hip hop with world elements. From that point on, using technology to CREATE has always been the most fulfilling thing for me, even if its designing web sites or programming. Needless to say I have just as important of a relationship with computers and technology as I do with music, which has helped my career in countless ways, especially creatively.

ZanaD: What inspires you to write music?

Nate: I love being in a creative space mentally, and I love the journey to becoming a better writer.

ZanaD: Who is your favorite artist?

Nate: Changes every week, literally… but if I had to choose one musical artist who has inspired me most, I’d have to pick a genius named Brian Transeau, aka BT. I think his old myspace blog inspired me most, it introduced me to a new way of thinking back when I was in high school and had relatively no direction compared to where I am now. http://www.myspace.com/mrbt/blog.

ZanaD: If you could have three wishes come true what would they be and why?

Nate: If I attempt to answer this, it will drive me crazy for weeks as better answers pop into my head. Pass.

ZanaD: When is your next  music production coming out?

Nate: I have quite a few tracks on upcoming albums from some amazing music production libraries, mainly LiquidCinema, who I do a lot of work for.

Where can people go to listen to the music you have produced?

Nate: www.nathanrightnour.com, in a few weeks… I haven’t put any new music up in months because I’ve been too busy writing it, and I want to redesign a new site soon because my current site is all hand coded and an absolute nuisance to update! So bookmark it and come back!

ZanaD: What is your dream?

Nate: Too many to count… musically, I just want to be happy with the music I produce and make a living from it, although as a perpetual student I’m never completely satisfied. So at some point when I’m 70 years old I’m just going to have to sit down with myself, look back on my favorite accomplishments, be proud and move on. Being respected as an artist wouldn’t hurt either – we all want to be respected for what we do.

ZanaD: If you were stuck on an island what three items would you bring?

Nate: A Verizon (important) cell phone to call for rescue, a sweet girl who thoughtfully packed me a hearty sandwich, and a billion dollar cashier’s check made out to me for when I get back.

ZanaD: If you were trapped in a room what three people would you want to be with?

Nate: Danny Ocean, Jackie Chan, and Hulk Hogan. That’s a lot of male but we’d be out of there in no time.

ZanaD: What musician would you want to go on a date with and why?

Nate: Megan Fox… she’s super fine and apparently all actresses double as singers these days.

ZanaD: Favorite quote?

Nate: Today I got a fortune cookie that said, “Beware of cookies bearing fortunes.”

Behind The Scenes With Cale Hawkins

ZanaD:Where would your dream place be to perform at?

Cale:Madison Square Garden would be incredible! I’d love to perform there.

ZanaD: What inspires you to write music?

Cale:I’m inspired by many things – life around me, the current state of the music industry and the world, experiences, and emotions, to name a few.

ZanaD:Whats the song you need to listen to when your feeling down?

Cale: I’m usually a pretty happy person, but once in a while when I get down I listen to the blues and they help a ton. There’s nothing like some Robert Johnson on a depressing day.

ZanaD:What’s your favorite band?

Cale: I don’t really have a favorite band, but my favorites definitely include The Roots, Soulive, and Stevie Wonder.

ZanaD: Whats your favorite song?

Cale: I don’t actually have a favorite song either! I usually find a new favorite song each week (or sometimes daily). I’m loving “Thelonius” by Slum Village right now though.

ZanaD: Who is your hero?

Cale: I have many heroes (especially in terms of music); I’d have to count Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Bruce Lee, Questlove, and J Dilla among them.

ZanaD: If you could have three wishes come true what would they be and why?

Cale:I would like to see an end to corruption in society, business and music; I’d also wish for healthy and happy lives for my friends, my family and myself; and finally, I’d wish for a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music so my parents wouldn’t have to worry about paying for my college tuition (haha)!

ZanaD: When is your next album coming out?

Cale: Sometime in the next year! I’ve begun brainstorming ideas right now.

ZanaD: When is your next concert?

Cale: I’m playing with a Berklee ensemble at Salem State College in Salem, MA on October 14th!

ZanaD:Where do you see your band in 5 years from now?

Cale: I’d like to be out there innovating and building a following five years from now!

ZanaD: What is your dream?

Cale: My dream is to start a new trend or create a new genre of music.

ZanaD:If you could be in any place right now where would it be?

Cale; I’m right where I want to be – studying at Berklee College of Music!

ZanaD: If you were stuck on an island what three items would you bring?

Cale: I would bring a wireless internet modem, a keyboard, and some headphones in all honesty. I could still get my music out there but also be able to play music 24/7 without any interruptions.

ZanaD:If you were trapped in a room what three people would you want to be with?

Cale: Definitely ?uestlove, J Dilla, and Stevie Wonder. That would be insane!

ZanaD: What musician would you want to go on a date with and why?

Cale: Beyonce Knowles, for obvious reasons.

ZanaD: Favorite quote?

Cale:”It ain’t where you’re from… it’s where you’re at.” – Rakim
